In addition to this some 100 theatres delight audiences state-wide with over 14,000 performances, the state is home to five UNESCO world heritage sites whilst some 500 castles and palaces, almost 450 monasteries, 120,000 monuments and 9,000 listed buildings bear witness to the import of the Bavarian cultural heritage.
Bavaria has so much to offer ranging from such world famous highlights as the Palace of Neuschwanstein, the Pinakothek art galleries in Munich to the cathedral in Passau home to the world’s largest organ in a Catholic church.
But there are also numerous lesser-known cultural treasures, too: the 19th century artists’ colony or the places visited by the Empress Sisi. The Sisi Road that is dedicated to her is just one of 15 delightful tourist routes criss-crossing Bavaria.
