Just before Christmas, a unique, homey atmosphere prevails in the town centre attuning its visitors in quite a special way to the “nicest holy day of the year”. Altötting provides an appropriate setting for shopping just before Christmas. Its refined gastronomy, rich in tradition, invites to dine in comfort. The “Christkindl Market” of Altötting, situated in the spacious chapel square which is free of traffic, ranks among the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany for already 40 years now. The Market is daily open from Saturday 26th November till Sunday 19th December 2010.
Walk to Altötting´s mangers and you will find lovingly designed seasonal mangers in the Collegiate Parish Church, St. Philippus and Jakobus, the Cemetry Church of St. Michael, St. Anna Basilica as well as a life-size manger in front of the huge St.Anna Basilica; and, in Kreszentiheimstraße, the “mechanical manger” (with 130 figures, some of which are set in motion electrically).
The Altötting Christmas carol singing at Advent the Alpine way. Various vocal and instrumental music groups from Altötting and the Bavarian uplands will give musical performances on Saturday, 27th November, Wednesday, 1st December, Saturday, 4th December, Wednesday, 8th December, Saturday, 11th December and Wednesday 15th December at 7 p.m. in Basilica St. Anna.
Another musical highlight is the annual Great Christmas Concert on Sunday, 19th December at 4.00 p.m. in Basilica St. Anna.
