Marienberg Fortress and Prince's Building

in 97070 Wuerzburg, Bavaria (DE)

The medieval castle belonging to the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg was continuously enlarged until the 16th century. Following an attack by the Swedes in 1631, Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn built a circle of massive bastions to protect the Marienberg.

In the innermost courtyard is the Prince’s Building, now a museum which also includes the Prince’s Hall and the Prince-Bishops’ Treasury and Sacred Vestment Room. In the section on municipal history there are two large models of Würzburg, showing the city in the Middle Ages and after the destruction of 1945.
